Science confirms: European olive oil is the strongest ally of our immune system

"A balanced lifestyle that follows the Mediterranean diet, particularly rich in plant-based foods combined with the use of extra virgin olive oil, helps prevent Low-Grade Inflammations and other chronic diseases by stimulating intestinal microbiota and the immune response

The aforementioned findings were published on March 2nd, 2021, in the prestigious International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

The authors of the study are Carlotta Suardi, Emanuela Cazzaniga, Stephanie Graci, Dario Dongo and Paola Palestini, from the School of Medicine and Surgery, University of Milano-Bicocca, the Bicocca Center of Science and Technology for FOOD, University of Milano-Bicocca.

Once again, scientific research confirms that European extra virgin olive oil - due to its unique, healthy and certified characteristics - is a crucial ingredient for a dietary regimen that seeks to strengthen the immune system.

The research has shown how olive oil, which is at the core of the Mediterranean diet, lowers the risk of "LGIs (low-grade inflammations) that not only increase the risk of chronic diseases but that can also cause complications related to infections and an increased susceptibility to infections themselves".

The scientists leading the research write: "Recently, scientific research has amply demonstrated that microbiota plays a key role in modulating metabolic responses of the immune system. There is, in fact, a bidirectional interaction between lifestyle, infection, and immunity. The immune response is compromised if the diet is unbalanced or insufficient. Indeed, an unbalanced diet negatively affects the intestinal flora predisposing people to infections and, at the same time, the nutritional status can be aggravated by the immune response to the infection. We seek to evaluate the link between a balanced diet, immune system efficiency and microbiota aiming to provide practical advice for individuals, with particular attention to the elderly."

In the symbiotic relationship between diet and personal health olive oil plays a crucial role.

Olive oil is an irreplaceable product that undergoes strict quality checks across the supply chain before reaching consumers. This project, launched by the European Union will shed light on all the benefits and properties of olive oil, in one of the countries that imports it the most: Japan.

Japanese consumers are increasingly using olive oil in their kitchen, especially those who are looking for a healthy, anti-aging and versatile ingredient for their diet.

Oliveoileu.jp is an easily accessible website that provides reliable and official information on olive oil, its countless uses and why it should become everyone’s healthy daily habit.

This valuable communication platform has been created, on behalf of the European Union, by OP Latium, an Italian olive oil manufacturer that has been at the forefront of best-quality olive oil production for decades.
